    Health Figures: An Open Source JavaScript Library for Health Data Visualization

    The way we look at data has a great impact on how we can understand it, particularly when the data is related to health and wellness. Due to the increased use of self-tracking devices and the ongoing shift towards preventive medicine, better understanding of our health data is an important part of improving the general welfare of the citizens. Electronic Health Records, self-tracking devices and mobile applications provide a rich variety of data but it often becomes difficult to understand. We implemented the hFigures library inspired on the hGraph visualization with additional improvements. The purpose of the library is to provide a visual representation of the evolution of health measurements in a complete and useful manner. We researched the usefulness and usability of the library by building an application for health data visualization in a health coaching program. We performed a user evaluation with Heuristic Evaluation, Controlled User Testing and Usability Questionnaires. In the Heuristics Evaluation the average response was 6.3 out of 7 points and the Cognitive Walkthrough done by usability experts indicated no design or mismatch errors. In the CSUQ usability test the system obtained an average score of 6.13 out of 7, and in the ASQ usability test the overall satisfaction score was 6.64 out of 7. We developed hFigures, an open source library for visualizing a complete, accurate and normalized graphical representation of health data. The idea is based on the concept of the hGraph but it provides additional key features, including a comparison of multiple health measurements over time. We conducted a usability evaluation of the library as a key component of an application for health and wellness monitoring.     Optimization for maximum modulation of a double-pass twisted nematic liquid crystal display

    Spatial light modulators are widely used to perform modulations of different properties of the electromagnetic field. In this work, a simple optimization method for general double-pass setups was developed. It takes into account the involved polarizing elements and displays, and a numerical simulation based on an exhaustive search routine finds the optimal optical axis orientations of the polarizing elements for the desired modulation. By simultaneously considering both impingements, we are able to take full advantage of the modulation capabilities of the chosen spatial light modulators. In particular, different polarization modulations and complex amplitude modulations were studied for twisted nematic liquid crystal displays and passive linear optical elements. Examples of different optimization criteria are shown and compared with experimental results, supporting the feasibility of this approach. This method offers the possibility of independent modulation of two properties of the input light state, outperforming the use of a single screen.Fil: Bordakevich, Sebastian Andres.     Diseño organizacional para la empresa comercial Ekocasa en el cantón General Antonio Elizalde (Bucay)

    El diseño organizacional para la empresa “COMERCIAL EKOCASA” en el cantón General Antonio Elizalde (Bucay), tuvo como objetivo el plantear manuales de políticas y procedimientos para cada área mediante una adecuada estructura organizacional para mejorar el funcionamiento e incrementar su productividad. En la investigación se empleó una metodología tanto cuantitativa y cualitativa, se aplicó encuestas a los colaboradores – clientes, entrevista al gerente general y se realizó un diagnóstico de la situación actual mediante la matriz FODA, donde se pudo determinar que la empresa trabaja de forma empírica lo que detiene cumplir con los procesos a cabalidad, mal uso de medios publicitarios en la corta trayectoria en el mercado. Mediante la creación de la filosofía corporativa adecuada ayudará a fomentar horizontes empresariales al igual que la estructura organizacional que ayude a erradicar la duplicidad de funciones con un manual para cada uno ellos colaboradores para el personal cumpla su actividades de manera eficaz y eficiente. La creación de la estructura organizacional canaliza cada una de las áreas del negocio donde se debe cumplir las actividades encomendadas en cada puesto de trabajo dando cumplimiento a la filosofía corporativa cumpliendo a cabalidad lo proceso y procedimientos de venta y atención al cliente con un servicio de calidad. The research employed both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, including surveys conducted with employees and clients, an interview with the general manager, and a diagnosis of the current situation using the SWOT matrix. This diagnosis revealed that the company operates empirically, hindering full compliance with processes, and there is a misuse of advertising media despite its short time in the market. An appropriate corporate philosophy creation will help promote business horizons, as will the organizational structure that aims to eliminate duplicate functions by providing manuals for each area, ensuring that employees perform their activities effectively and efficiently. Establishing the organizational structure channels each area of the business, where activities assigned to each position must be fulfilled in alignment with the corporate philosophy, ensuring adherence to sales and customer service processes and procedures with a focus on delivering quality service.     The Digi-NewB project for preterm infant sepsis risk and maturity analysis

    It is known from the literature that the careful analysis of the heart rate variability of a preterm infant can be used as a predictor of sepsis. The Digi-NewB project aims at collecting a database of at least 750 preterm infants including physiological signals, video and clinical observations. These data are used to design a decision support system for the early detection of sepsis and for the evaluation of the infant maturity. The preparation of the data for the exploratory analysis has turned out to be time-consuming. 190 infants have been recorded by March 2018 and of these, the R-R interval analysis of the ECG signals has been completed of 136 infants. The results of the project are still preliminary but seven heart rate variability parameters have been found to be different in preterm and full-term infants with a P value less than 0.01.     Automatic motion compensation of free breathing acquired myocardial perfusion data by using independent component analysis

    Images acquired during free breathing using first-pass gadolinium-enhanced myocardial perfusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exhibit a quasiperiodic motion pattern that needs to be compensated for if a further automatic analysis of the perfusion is to be executed. In this work, we present a method to compensate this movement by combining independent component analysis (ICA) and image registration: First, we use ICA and a time?frequency analysis to identify the motion and separate it from the intensity change induced by the contrast agent. Then, synthetic reference images are created by recombining all the independent components but the one related to the motion. Therefore, the resulting image series does not exhibit motion and its images have intensities similar to those of their original counterparts. Motion compensation is then achieved by using a multi-pass image registration procedure. We tested our method on 39 image series acquired from 13 patients, covering the basal, mid and apical areas of the left heart ventricle and consisting of 58 perfusion images each. We validated our method by comparing manually tracked intensity profiles of the myocardial sections to automatically generated ones before and after registration of 13 patient data sets (39 distinct slices). We compared linear, non-linear, and combined ICA based registration approaches and previously published motion compensation schemes. Considering run-time and accuracy, a two-step ICA based motion compensation scheme that first optimizes a translation and then for non-linear transformation performed best and achieves registration of the whole series in 32 ± 12 s on a recent workstation.     Segmentation of RV in 4D Cardiac MR Volumes using region-merging graph cuts

    Non-invasive quantitative assessment of the right ventricular anatomical and functional parameters is a challenging task. We present a semi-automatic approach for right ventricle (RV) segmentation from 4D MR images in two variants, which differ in the amount of user interaction. The method consists of three main phases: First, foreground and background markers are generated from the user input. Next, an over-segmented region image is obtained applying a watershed transform. Finally, these regions are merged using 4D graph-cuts with an intensity based boundary term. For the first variant the user outlines the inside of the RV wall in a few end-diastole slices, for the second two marker pixels serve as starting point for a statistical atlas application. Results were obtained by blind evaluation on 16 testing 4D MR volumes. They prove our method to be robust against markers location and place it favourably in the ranks of existing approaches

    Assembling models of embryo development: Image analysis and the construction of digital atlases

    Digital atlases of animal development provide a quantitative description of morphogenesis, opening the path toward processes modeling. Prototypic atlases offer a data integration framework where to gather information from cohorts of individuals with phenotypic variability. Relevant information for further theoretical reconstruction includes measurements in time and space for cell behaviors and gene expression. The latter as well as data integration in a prototypic model, rely on image processing strategies. Developing the tools to integrate and analyze biological multidimensional data are highly relevant for assessing chemical toxicity or performing drugs preclinical testing. This article surveys some of the most prominent efforts to assemble these prototypes, categorizes them according to salient criteria and discusses the key questions in the field and the future challenges toward the reconstruction of multiscale dynamics in model organisms

    Apolipoprotein D (ApoD) is an extracellular glycoprotein of the lipocalin protein family, involved in different functions such as immune response, cell proliferation regulation, chemoreception, retinoid metabolism, axon growth, and proteolysis regulation. This lipocalin is expressed predominantly in the nervous system (NS), both prenatally (vascular pericytes) and postnatally (glia and neurons) and in adulthood. It is also expressed in other tissues and is carried by high-density lipoprotein (HDL) in plasma, so it could interfere in cholesterol and other lipids regulation. ApoD increases considerably in systemic apocrine gland tumors and also in some primary brain tumors. Although the specific biological role of ApoD is unknown, the presence of ApoD in tumors appears to be a prognostic factor in their evolution. Regarding the NS, increased ApoD expression observed in many neurodegenerative diseases could be used to make an early diagnosis thereof

    Coronary Artery Tracking in 3D Cardiac CT Images Using Local Morphological Reconstruction Operators

    Automatic segmentation and tracking of the coronary artery tree from Cardiac Multislice-CT images is an important goal to improve the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease. This paper presents a semi-automatic algorithm (one input point per vessel) based on morphological grayscale local reconstructions in 3D images devoted to the extraction of the coronary artery tree. The algorithm has been evaluated in the framework of the Coronary Artery Tracking Challenge 2008 [1], obtaining consistent results in overlapping measurements (a mean of 70% of the vessel well tracked). Poor results in accuracy measurements suggest that future work should refine the centerline extraction. The algorithm can be efficiently implemented and its general strategy can be easily extrapolated to a completely automated centerline extraction or to a user interactive vessel extractio
